Just ignite the light and let it shine (Meeting Anna Sui)
Hello Blog readers!
My summer has been AMAZING so far ,this has really been the best. Courtesy of Teen Vogue, I'll be going to the premiere of Monte Carlo and I'm SO excited! But until then I've just been doing so many things. I can't blog about everything so follow me on twitter if you have one (@AshaKayB).
I'm mainly here to tell you about one of my most amazing experiences thus far. On June 15th I had the pleasure of attending a lecture and meeting Anna Sui and Deborah Nadoolman Landis. Anna Sui is the famed fashion designer who is known for her beautiful, vibrant collections. Deborah Nadoolman Landis is an award winning costume designer who designed the famous red jacket Michael Jackson wore in Thriller and also costume designed for films like Coming to America and many more.
It was amazing. Inspiring really, to hear both women talk about their passion for fashion whether it may be for the runway or for the set, it was just so beautiful.
They spoke about some awesome films which wardrobes inspired them and their collections. Well Anna Sui's collection really, Deborah Landis mainly spoke about the fact that costumes will not have an impact if the movie is not good, which is very true. They mentioned a lot of films and I took notes of the ones who wardrobes I admired the most and that I had not seen. This list includes:
Out of Africa
Wall Street
Pretty Woman (classic)
Mad Men
Women in Love
Factory Girl
Beach Blanket Bingo
Sabrina
Buffalo Bill
Beau Brummell
Dr.Doolittle (the original)
and many more.
It was all just amazing, I learned that costume design is not about the clothes, its about serving the story. It's so interesting to think that like movies our day to day lives are stories and we express and carry these stories with us through the items we choose to wear.
After the lecture I had the pleasure of chatting with Anna Sui about her career, what got her started and what her passion is.
When I asked her about her passion for fashion, and how she knew that it was what she wanted to do she told me "I wanted to be a designer since I was four....I didn't quite understand what it was then but I knew that its what I wanted to do." She shared the rest of the story of how she got started with me and I felt inspired to tell her my own dreams. I shared with her my strong interest in fashion design and she gave me some great advice. She told me to take a fashion class, find out what type of fashion I really love and to focus on it. Once I'm focused I should take my time to really learn what fashion is and grow in it, look around stores see whats selling and why people like it and once I've figured that out I can really begin. She's so humble and calm, it was truly a pleasure getting to meet her and I hope we see each other again.
Now here is my best friend and I with Deborah Landis. First of all let me say that this woman is such a BEAUTIFUL HEIGHT!
She's so vibrant and full of personality. She invited my best friend and I to join her conversation about costume design with two girls that stood with her. Every word she said I felt like I really understood in my heart. Although I'm not planning to costume design the words she spoke about it are very true. She told us that a costume designer studies everything about a person and what they wear, from their outfit to their bitten down nails. To excel at their job of understanding a character a costume designer really observes everything about an individual. She said its mainly because costume design isn't about the fashion, its about helping the director sell the story. She spoke about taking a simple story and thinking about how different the costumes would be if the story was given to both Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton. The conversation was so interesting, it really made me think.
Over all it was a great experience and I couldn't stop smiling on the way home. I can't wait to continue doing more really cool fashion related stuff this summer. Hope you all are enjoying yours! (Don't forget to keep up with my daily by following me on twitter @AshaKayB) Toodles :)

Summer came like cinnamon so sweet....
Well I guess the best way for me to reveal my face is to do it big, so here I am promoting a Pacsun contest for TEEN VOGUE!
It all started with me submitting my dress working double duty as a skirt. Now this is something that I'm super familiar with. In one of my old blogger entries called Because a cats the only cat who knows where its at (<-- click to see the blog), I turned one of my grandmothers skirts into a dress, so having to make a skirt or dress work double duty made me excited to get to work on this challenge. So first I turned the dress into a skirt.
Shown Below:
Next thing you know I was being emailed to send in a photo of me wearing it as a dress, so I styled it and sent it in. Then someone from Teen Vogue emailed me and told me that I was going to be in the June/July issue!!!
What made me even more excited is that Selena Gomez is on the cover and I remembered when she covered the 2009 June/July issue. I LOVED her spread and adore her style so I couldn't wait to see what was in store this time around and Teen Vogue surely did not disappoint.
Here's some of my favorite shots:

And he ad is pretty small, but it's still exciting non the less!
I'm also featured on the it list website : http://teenvogueitlist.com/pacsun
So this is me!! This is SO exciting and I'll try to do more cool stuff like this and post it on here. :) I hope you guys like the outfit and enter the contest(you can win a $500 shopping spree with Pacsun). I promise to blog more often this summer and trust I won't disappoint!!
P.S. Don't forget to follow me on twitter: @AshaKayB (twitter.com/AshaKayB) I follow back!

That's the way ya body go!
I was in my school's library this week rummaging through old Life magazines when I came across this:
It's a soap ad from 1960!
I bet with a splash of color that could very well be an ad you see today while flipping through your favorite magazine. The ad had a list of benefits for using the soap daily but the biggest selling point was its promise to keep you "blemish free." To me that confirmed that the quest for the perfect facial cleanser is nothing new under the sun.
I thought about my own venture to find the remedy for great skin and all arrows pointed in the direction of one brand, Clean and Clear. Since I'm entering the Burst a Move contest I decided to try the Morning Burst products.
First off they ALL smell soooooooooooooooooo good!
My favorite right now is Boost: Mango & Papaya. I just want to eat it. :) A lot of my friends open the bottle and squeeze it just to get a whiff of it and sometimes I have to grab the bottle so they'll stop. Oh yeah, it's that good!
The morning burst facial cleanser also smells amazing. At first I was hesitant to try it because my skin is very sensitive and sometimes acne products are too strong and burn my face but this one is the complete opposite. After I wash my face it feels so clean and fresh.
Charge:Pomegranate & Orange Zest, smells good as well. It really wakes up my senses! I can't wait to go and buy Splash which smells like wildberrys and guava, yummm.
Just the use of the products energize me and get me excited to enter the contest! I can't wait to boost, charge and splash my way into the Burst a Move contest and hopefully I'll burst right into Fashion U!
Now I've just gotta finish learning the steps. You can learn them too just watch the video below.
For more details visit the Clean and Clear facebook page :http://www.facebook.com/cleanandclear?sk=app_189128311115909
And follow me on twitter for contest updates and personal updates as I pull my moves together to enter the contest as well: (@ashakayb) http://twitter.com/ashakayb
Hope you all are working hard on your entries. Can't wait to see who wins!

I always tell you how great you dress... it's cause i'm fashionably socialized!
If anyone knows me they know I love ALL things Teen Vogue. I've been a die hard collector of the magazine since 08'.
One of the best things about Teen Vogue is that they allow you to not just be whisked away by the fashion world but also to experience it. Not just through their colorful spreads and exciting articles, but their events are always A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
I attended my first Teen Vogue event in 2008.It was the Rock meets Runway fashion show. I had no idea that in attending my first fashion show in addition to walking away with a "swag"/goodie bag filled with cool stuff and free c.d's that I'd also win a T-shirt in a raffle, meet awesome people, rock out to great music and meet my fashion icon, THE Chanel Iman.
(sorry about the edit..not one of my best pics, plus I'm still anonymous..for now at least lol)
In 2009 I enjoyed a night of fashion, fragrance, fun and lots of CANDY! At the Nanette Lepore fragrance release in Sephora. Which you can read about in my blog from that event--> Always something there to remind me...
This past summer (2010) they whisked me away for a fun day in the city Declaring my denim!
And today in 2011 they....
can let me dance my way to Fashion University?
First off let me tell you a little about Fashion U. It's like going to SCAD or FIDM or F.I.T but only for 3 days and all of your professors are big names in the industry. In the past they've had Zac Posen, Vera Wang, Kimora Lee Simmons, Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Anna Wintour , just to name a few. The itinerary is always one to die for, Teen Vogue always knows how to have amazing (life changing really) events! :)
Click for website -> Fashion University
I've applied twice and got in each year, but due to travel plans and finical expenses I was never able to attend. But this year Teen Vogues making the plans to go a little bit more fun for two best friends!
Get ready to Burst your move into fashion and Fashion U with Teen Vogues Burst a Move contest sponsored by Clean and Clear!Submit a video of you and your BFF doing the official Burst a Move Dance and you can win a trip to FASHION U in NYC!!
For more details visit their facebook page :http://www.facebook.com/cleanandclear?sk=app_189128311115909
And follow me on twitter for contest updates and personal updates as I pull my moves together to enter the contest as well: (@ashakayb) http://twitter.com/ashakayb

Vibin to the music; this is how we do it..all night
-Sorry for the lack of Fashion and Photography in this post but this is just a quick UPDATE.--
Wow I haven't been "busy" with fashion things in so long but Teen Vogue has found a way to make it all worth it again.
I was chosen to be a brand ambassador and I'm super pumped! I can't wait to get started, so look out for updates in that area. ;)
As for my college life, work is starting to pile up so I might be really busy with that soon. If you're wondering what has been going on in terms of my internships and things of that area. I was fortunate enough to snag a one day internship or "career observation" if you must at the High Museum of art here in ATL. The High is like the southern version of the MET. I must admit that was one of the most amazing experiences that I've ever had and guess what?
I was invited back in April to help with one of their events! I'm super excited it'll be one of my first grown up socialite events. I think living in New York and going to Teen Vogue events prepared me very well for this. ;)
I'm still looking for my summer internship but my clothing line (my baby) is still in the making. I found a place not to far from my school that makes t-shirts, so I think I'll start with that first.
I'm generally really happy, my freshmen year was a success so far. I adapted really well to an entirely new city (Atlanta,GA), I was able to network and almost catch up with the busy New York City life I left behind. As for my photography I have a meeting with the art department to create my major, since a Photography major isn't offered. But one of my pictures did win best portrait in the photo auction here. (Woot woot) I'm really starting to "come into myself" as a college student and I love every minute of it.
And to believe I'm still just a freshmen.....glad to know things are off to an incredible start, the future only gets brighter.
-Toodles!
